Hello Andy, can you help me? I’m DG Luis Carranza from District 5340 in San Diego, CA. I have a Rotary Club of Borrego Springs that called me this morning. They discovered that they had lost their 501(c)(3) status for their club foundation a few years ago. They need some guidance, and i was not sure if this is something you can help or guide us. Please let me know if you can. thank you Luis Carranza

  1. Hi Luis;

    It looks like they are eligible to use the streamline process to request that the IRS reinstate their non-profit status.
    1. For each year missed, file a postcard 990 or 990ez to catch up all the filings.
    2. Make sure that on each return “Retroactive Reinstatement” is written on the top and bottom of each form.
    3. A letter accompanying the returns stating that you wish to be reinstated.
    4. A fee of $275 for reistatement should be attached.
    5. The IRS normally will review and send the organization another determination letter stating the status as been reinstated as of a date (usually the date of revoction.

    If you want, I can send you a few items found during my research. I am going through this with another club now.

    Good luck and keep me posted.

    Andy
