Our Rotary International club in Solvang has a member whose behavior has included verbal abuse, profanity, and throwing objects during club meetings. The club has addressed these incidents through multiple steps: verbal warnings, written warnings, and a three-month suspension. Despite these actions, the behavior has continued.
The Club Board convened a formal meeting and invited the member to present his perspective. The concerns regarding his conduct were clearly presented, and he was given an opportunity to respond and rebut the allegations. After he spoke, he was asked to leave the room, and the Board voted 10–0 to terminate his membership.
The member is now requesting arbitration.
We are seeking guidance on the appropriate next steps. Additionally, due to the nature of these repeated outbursts, several members have expressed discomfort attending meetings, and there is concern about maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
We respectfully request direction regarding the arbitration process and any additional steps that should be taken to ensure compliance with Rotary policies and the club constitution.
Thanks, Michael Dutra – District Governor 5240 2025/2026
