Dear Dr. Harrington,
Carlsbad Rotary in Carlsbad NM sponsored an Interact Club in 2018. The club at the high school was already in place under Kiwanis, and their Key Club program. Kiwanis disbanded in Carlsbad and they chose Carlsbad Rotary to take over the sponsorship of the high school organization. At that time, Kiwanis completed the paperwork for Key Club with the IRS and maintained the paperwork.
Our question is, does Carlsbad Rotary apply for the Interact club to be a 501 C 3 with the IRS? Is there a place that lists all responsibilities for the Interact Club and responsibilities of the host club?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Veronica Hernandez

One Response
This is an extremely unusual situation, in which a Kiwanis Club has folded, and passed off to the local Rotary Club its high school Key Club — telling them they are welcome to turn it into an Interact Club, if they wish to do so. The Rotary Club has obviously never sponsored an Interact Club, and knows nothing about Interact. Consequently, they asked for information about what would be required for them to sponsor an Interact Club. I responded via email to Veronica Hernandez, answering her questions, and promised to call her. In advance of that call, I emailed to her a copy of Rotary’s Interact Handbook-Guide for Sponsoring Interact Clubs, along with a copy of the Interact Club Certification Form. I also offered to schedule a Zoom session with her to talk in more depth about Interact and sponsoring an Interact Club. I following up the email with a phone call, but had to leave a voice message, asking her to call me.; and I sent a second email, asking her to call me. Unfortunately, I received no call-back, or any response to either of my emails, with their attached materals. I can only assume this club has no interest in further discussing the possibility of sponsoring an Interact Club.
